Celebrating 100 Years of Vending Innovation

From the earliest automatic merchandisers to today’s connected convenience solutions, Crane Convenience has helped shape the vending industry for over a century.

Our Story Began in 1926

For more than a century, Crane Convenience has helped shape the way people access food, beverages, snacks, and everyday essentials.

Our story begins in 1926, in the energy and optimism of the Roaring Twenties, when the National Sales Machine Co. was founded in St. Louis. It was an era of big ideas, rapid industrial progress, and new possibilities in automatic merchandising. From the beginning, the company was built around a simple but powerful idea: create reliable vending solutions that make products more accessible, convenient, and commercially successful.

Built on Ingenuity from the Start

The company’s earliest roots were grounded in invention. B.F. Fry pioneered one of the first cigarette vending machines that could claim to be “practically slug proof,” helping set a new standard for dependable automatic merchandising. Although the business faced early setbacks, including the challenges of the Great Depression, the idea endured. In 1933, Ben W. Fry carried the vision forward by organizing National Vendors, Inc., giving the business a new beginning and a foundation for long-term growth.

That early spirit still defines us today. Crane Convenience has always been shaped by people who saw what vending could become, then engineered the products, systems, and support needed to make it real.

A Business Built Around Customers

Innovation was never just about machines. It was also about helping operators succeed.

In 1934, Albert Diederich joined the company and helped build capabilities that would become central to the business: a direct sales team, field-based technical service support, and an internal financing department to help customers purchase new vending machines. These developments helped create a customer-focused model that supported growth, service, and long-term industry relationships.

That customer-first mindset has carried through generations. From equipment reliability to serviceability, from payment systems to merchandising flexibility, our history reflects a consistent focus on helping operators run stronger, more profitable businesses.

Growing with the Industry

As the vending industry evolved, so did we.

What began with cigarette merchandising expanded into candy, sandwiches, groceries, baked goods, hot food, cold drinks, hot drinks, milk, and full-line vending solutions. By the post-war years, the business was focused on diversification and developing comprehensive merchandising solutions to meet broader workplace and consumer needs.

Across decades, the company introduced new cabinet formats, beverage systems, food vending concepts, payment technologies, and merchandising designs. Each generation of products reflected the same goal: make vending more capable, more reliable, and more valuable for operators and the locations they serve.

Leading Through Change

Our history also reflects a willingness to adapt through major moments of change.

During World War II, National Vendors paused vending machine production from 1942 to 1945 and converted assembly operations to support the war effort by producing 52mm mortar ammunition casings. After the war, the company returned to vending with renewed momentum, expanding into new product categories as workplaces and consumer needs changed.

In the decades that followed, the business continued to grow through product innovation, strategic acquisitions, facility investments, and global expansion. By the 1970s, the company had expanded internationally into Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

A Crane Legacy

A major milestone came in 1985, when Crane Co. acquired UniDynamics and National Vendors. The acquisition brought National Vendors into the Crane family and connected its vending heritage with Crane’s broader tradition of owning and growing strong niche businesses with leading market positions.

Under Crane ownership, the business continued investing in productivity, quality, facilities, and product development. New generations of equipment brought more contemporary styling, greater merchandising flexibility, and stronger operator value. Innovations such as SnackCenter advanced flexible merchandising with lighter, durable plastic trays, electronically coupled spirals, and broader package capability.

100 Years Forward

Today, Crane Convenience carries this legacy into a new era.

Our history is not just a record of machines, facilities, or product launches. It is a story of people solving real operator challenges, advancing the vending experience, and helping shape an industry that continues to move forward. From early automatic merchandisers to modern connected solutions, our role has remained consistent: help operators deliver convenience with confidence.

As we celebrate 100 years in the industry, we honor the people, ideas, and innovations that built this foundation. More importantly, we look ahead to what comes next.

Because for Crane Convenience, history has always been in motion.
